Spain's Angela Ponce is first transgender Miss Universe candidate


Angela Ponce, 27, of Seville, Spain is making history as the first ever transgender woman to compete in Miss Universe. She is a model who was crowned Miss World Cadiz in 2015. 

Representing Cadiz, Ponce competed in Miss Universe Spain 2015 at the Auditorio de Marbella in Marbella, Spain on July 30, 2019. She was unplaced while Carla Garcia, 25, of Las Palmas was crowned.

Representing Seville, Ponce competed in Miss Universe Spain 2018. She won the title on June 29, 2018 at the August Auditorium, Palau Firal i de Congressos in Tarragona, Spain besting 19 other candidates. 

Runner-up to Ponce was Miriam Paredes Gines of Madrid. Also both from Madrid, Sheila Monjas and Raquel Arias Jimenez were the respective second and third runners-up.

Vanessa Fernandez of Cantabria was fourth runner-up. Andrea de las Heras of Madrid was fifth runner-up. 

Crowning Ponce as Miss Universe Spain 2018 by Miss Universe 2017 Sofia del Prado, 25, of Castilla-La Mancha. The latter made it to the Top 10 in Miss Universe 2017 at The AXIS at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on November 26, 2017.

Before Miss Universe 2017, del Prado was crowned Reina Hispanoamericana 2015. She was also Miss Universe Spain 2015 second runner-up.

Ponce will be the 59th woman to represent Spain in Miss Universe. If she wins, she will become not only the first transgender titleholder of the international beauty pageant but also the second titleholder from Spain.

The first ever woman from Spain to win Miss Universe was the late Amparo Munoz Quesada of Malaga, Spain. She was crowned Miss Universe 1974 by Miss Universe 1973 Margarita Moran of the Philippines on July 21, 1974 at the Folk Arts Theater in the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

Six months after Munoz's coronation, she refused to follow Miss Universe's organizational regulations and decided to relinquish her title. She went on to become a popular actress and died due to undeclared issues on February 27, 2011.
